Lockdown

Leftover screens we found in a basement excursion are our security measures

Lockdown at the Penitentiary. We’ve had a couple “Code Reds” occur and it seems like every time it’s Chicken Parm testing his her(?) boundaries. Earlier this week James ventured down and found a trail of droppings all leading to Chicken Parm parading around the basement. Just this morning I went down to check on them and even with the extra security measures counted 9 instead of 10. There wasn’t a trail of poop so I looked where every farmer looks first: the food. Sure enough Chicken Parm was circling the food bag, most likely planning an attempt to break into it.

Lockdown 2

The feeder: original feeder inside to prevent a certain chicken dish named fowl from sitting inside and pooping in the food.

The 12 pound metal feeder and 2 gallon waterer are working fine, I enjoy how much food the feeder holds, it means not having to refill it every other day. We hung it quite high so they can’t scratch and scrabble all the food out so it’s been lasting a good amount of time. The waterer I’m not so sure about. We didn’t want plastic, mainly because when it is hot we didn’t want the plastic warming up and leeching BPAs into the water and eventually into the chickens system’s perhaps eventually effecting their eggs which in turn we eat. Also, we will have to heat it in the winter and again, heat, water and plastic. So I purchased the metal one, my biggest qualm is that it is so darn hard to fill it and place it without unintentionally creating a small puddle. So I guess we’ll see how long this one lasts. Anyone else have this problem? It’s probably just me.

Screened in the Redlight District

Anyway, they’ve gotten quite large. Very fluffy. All except Stumpy. Stumpy is as ugly as ever (pictures in the feature image). For a short while I started to get worried and was totally crazy-chicken-mom-ing it up so I posted a couple pictures on the Connecticut Poultry Swap Facebook page and asked if I should be worried. My main concern was that this poor little thing was suffering and I was just prolonging it’s suffering. I had a good number of responses. None told me to worry. Some told me it was probably a late bloomer. Several told me it looked like a roo (short term for a rooster) oh goodie, and I had a couple telling me that it was not in fact an Araucana but a Black Laced Silver Wyandotte. After some Google-ing I wasn’t too bummed! If Stumpy does turn out to be a Wyandotte roo we will most likely have to get rid of him but he’ll be nice to look at until we do! We shall see, so far he’s (she?) is a sight for sore eyes.

Soon!

The coop is coming along nicely! We’ll be posting more about the building process soon but so far I’m predicting that by the end of the month we’ll be able to move them in! Thank god because I think we’ve exhausted our security measures and I’m certainly not a fan of stepping in bird poo bright and early in the morning.

PS: Can you believe they were ever this small!?
