Our little teenagers are growing fast and let me tell you, chick puberty is not pretty. They are all wings, bald spots and disproportionate limbs. Their wings are growing fast, and they exercise them daily. Flying is the new favorite thing and trying to scale the walls of their enclosure is how they practice. I can’t wait to get the chicken coop finished so we could get them in it, but I don’t think its warm enough at night yet.

Can you tell which is Chicken Parm? Hint: He is the one eyeballing the camera

Instead of just the corrugated cardboard siding they now have chicken wire surrounding the pen as well, and STILL have figured out they can fly up and perch on the edge. It is a common practice for both Jim and I to count the chicks each time we visit. I wouldn’t be surprised if I venture downstairs one day to find chickens running wild in the basement.

The Penitentiary

They eat like crazy and make a huge mess. We are on our third bag of five pound chicken starter. I have been cutting up some scraps and feeding them it as well as sprinkling chick grit in their feed to aid them eating the large food. So far I have given them carrots, cilantro stems, chives, parsley and celery, making sure to cut them up finely.

Stubby is the only one without full wings yet

We will be planning the coop this week. While we have the design, we still need to figure out the materials and when and where we will get them. Hopefully this weekend we will be able to dig and build the foundation.

Wish us luck!
